In my paintings I ask myself “Is this the way the world is?”  I reshape and retool my painting experience to answer that question.   But while the question begins with the world, it ends with the work itself: “Is this the way the world is in this work?”
The search is for the world in painting and painting in the world (painting worlds/ paintings world).  Am I in the world or is the world in me?  I allude to my life, to writer’s works, to imagery and it is my hope that this record of allusion conjures and creates the same.  I am referring to text, theory, idea but I am also finding myself already there, looking out to see in.

Ever since visiting Mystic, CT, as a boy, I’ve been fascinated by the sea and anything boat-related. When I decided to start painting again, the subject matter was obvious. Painting, drawing, and photographing the maritime landscape allows me to travel back in time to be that 7-year-old boy again.

Portrait paintings satisfy our deepest desire to look, past a fleeting moment, at another human being. In a sense, the art of portraiture acts as both a lens and mirror. We see what makes another individual unique and simultaneously experience our own humanity.
In today's world, the value of a human being is increasingly measured by how well he or she conforms (or rebels). I believe portraiture can remind us of what we are missing--real people of unusual beauty, depth, and complexity.
In fact, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the necessity of perceiving other people, other cultures, and our shared humanity has ever been more important.

My artistic goal is to bridge the gap between the temporal and the ethereal realms by interpreting visually what can only be characterized as an intuitive rhythm.  The immaterial is the conduit with which I intend to evoke a deep introspective posture that is sometimes elusive within the constraints of modern society.  My purpose is a singular encounter with each composition.

In the pursuit of artistic mastery, the realization of one’s own contribution to the celebration of life, these paintings are a collage framed in intellectual and emotional interpretations of experiences transfigured through physical gestation, manifesting in contrast and composition.  Drawings are a personal exercise to master the tonal undulations of light cascading over recognizable volumes of space, capturing an individual moment in time by means of the most simplistic of mediums; pencil and paper.

After having graduated from Arizona State University’s fine art department in 1996, I turned to painting, after having spent the majority of my art career in drawing and printmaking. I draw my greatest influence in my creative turmoil not from viewing other art, but from anything that involves one creative person simply succeeding in their struggle to be heard and to keep their voice as pure and clear as possible. My current work is exclusively oil based, either on panel or canvas with sizes varying upon the impact of the work that is to be created. The abstract/non-objective work comprises a much deeper journey inward, touching upon raw emotion through a harmony of color, sometimes through a muted palette, other times utilizing a full spectrum of tones and value. Form and symmetry become steady backbones to each structural piece, whether incorporating organic shapes or by pushing color fields, each painting becomes a dance between order and chaos.  Other work currently being explored is more representational and symbolic in nature, such as “Brick and Butterfly” and “From the Ashes of Empires.” These paintings carry a more traditional theme, with a greater emphasis on objects, imaginary and colored lighting and a simplified composition. My hope is for the viewer to walk away with a raw response to the imagery, evoking a sense of something powerful or greater than them selves. Dark, lush, timeless, provocative; these things I strive for in every body of work.
